Definately book a hotel in advance. That would eliminate the possiblity of not having anywhere to stay once you got there! I would pick a family oriented resort or maybe even rent a condo. Try the Holiday Inn Sunspree. They are very nice and reasonably priced. As far as what to carry goes, depends on if you're flying or driving there.
Cash---good question. Most all places accept debit cards now. Especially vacation spots. It always makes me feel better not to have much actual cash and just my card. Have fun and be safe!

-definitely book a hotel room in advance (in the summer, the beaches can get pretty crowded and you could get stuck staying somewhere bad)
-the ammount of cash depends on what beach you are going to...in california, i would say a generous ammount because everything costs more over there
in florida, a little less because things are more reasonably priced
