The first answer is quite right Tybee Island is beautiful.
Tybee Island is probably the best beach on the Georgia Coast.
There are the main public beaches but also ones less populated.
Go to the mouth of the Savannah river where the calmer waters are good for boating, kayaking and jet-skiing spots.
If your on a budget you would be better off staying elsewhere, Tybee accommodation is quite expensive.
As you suggest a little inland will save money and a drive around Savannah is a must anyhow.
And the weather wont be sun-drenched, but quite mild compared to West Virginia!!

tybee island is so pretty.its in savannah and they have a string of islands ,that being the last one

Tybee Island, GA – about 10 miles outside Savannah. Two of my girlfriends and I rented a two BR condo there right on the beach and had a great time! Cute little funky shops; nice casual places to eat [food was good]. We found it remarkably affordable when divided among three women…In fact it was cheaper than when we actually stayed in Savannah the year before.
