Virginia Beach Vacation Get Away?

What are your opinions on VA Beach as a 4 day get away for a family with kids? What is there to do near by? How is the boardwalk? Is the area safe at night? We are considering the Holiday Inn Sunspree on 37th st to stay? Any other details would be very helpful in making our decision
