He did very well just laying on a large beach blanket, under a large umbrella. The important things are: keep applying sunscreen, keep him in the shade for most of the time, cover his eyes with sunglasses or a hat, and keep the sand out of his face and hands. That way she won't be tempted to shove fistfuls of sand in her mouth. Also, take a trip to Walmart/Target/Walgreens before you go, and purchase some baby sunscreen, and a wide rimmed baby hat.
