the beach is very pretty and i am terrified of sharks too. but i love the beach its very peaceful to me. I don’t go pass my knees in the water to be safe.

yes you do need to be careful but you are more likely to get struck by lightening than be killed by a shark. Just pay attention to your surroundings such as life guards, news and other people. Try to stay away from piers because when the fishermen fillet their fish they get the blood & stuff in the water & it draws the sharks to that area.

I’ve been watching shark week on the discovery channel all week so i’m a little afraid of shaarks right now too! lol. Swim only in areas that are marked, don’t swim in murky waters, or at dawn or dusk. You’ll be fine, shark attacks rarely happen. Bring clothes, a swimsuit,a towel, sunscreen, and toiletries. Anything that you would use at home, bring with you.

…..yes there are sharks in the Gulf,but there has been only been 2 attacks on the “Emerald Coast” from Apalachiacola to Pensacola in the past 3 years,and only 1 major.Go and enjoy yourself.

I live in Pensacola and as long as you swim where the lifeguards are you will be safe. We also have a local water-park, Sam’s Surf City is a lot of fun. Here are some links of things in Pensacola. Welcome to my home and I hope you have fun. Bring shorts, light weight tops, if you are a girl sundresses( my wife told me that one) and lots of sunscreen.

A teenage girl was killed by a Bull Shark in that general area several years back so yes, it is a real concern. Florida is the shark attack capital of the US. The gulf coast does have a large population of Bull Sharks which is the number one killer of humans. That being said, only a small percentage of beach goers ever get attacked by sharks. I too am afraid of the beach because it would be my luck that I would be that one in a million. I agree with that last poster. Don’t go into deep water but remember that many shark attacks take place in knee deep water. I once saw an aerial photo of the beach in Daytona, Florida, taken by the US geological survey. It was erie, because you could see dozens of sharks (some of them over six feet long) swimming among the swimmers but apparently they do not attack that often. As for me, I just don’t trust them.

I noticed your question. When you go to the beach go to the Pensacola Pier parking lot for starters. When you are walking to the beach you will see a flag pole with a single colored flag. This is the beach condition flag. There is a sign by the parking lot explaining what the different colors mean. I believe the Blue Flag is flying if Dangerous Marine Life is present. If unsure, go to one of the small white houses on stilts and ask a lifeguard. Hope this helps.
