Sorry to tell you this.. most beaches in the keys suck.They may be nice to look at it, but they are not nice for swimming and sitting.
The best beach in the keys is probably at Bahia honda state park. Its a very thin beach, but its sandy and the water is clear and not rocky.

Bahia Honda is great, but not for swimming. Smathers beach is a great hang out spot in Key west, but still not for swimming. I would rent a boat and go out to a reef.

I was disappointed in Pennekamp but we loved Bahia Honda
and Islmorada’s Founders Park was very nice
We stayed at the Islamorada Motel
and The Pelican in Key Largo, which has a rental plus motel rooms
